Modern Vintage Boys Bedroom – One Room Challenge – Week 4

Week 4!! I can’t believe we’re halfway through the One Room Challenge. This was a big week. If you’ve been following along in my IG stories, I’ve been working on our Ikea Svalnas hack all week long. This was a big project and I’m happy to have it checked off the list.

THE GOAL

The main goal of this project was to find a shelving/desk unit that does not have a large footprint. I love the idea of a unit that hangs on the wall, so it’s not taking up any floor space. I came across the Ikea Svalnas series and decided it would be the perfect fit (with a few updates of course).

MY PLAN

I am not making any major updates to the Ikea Svalnas series. In fact, it’s a great unit as-is with the light-colored wood and white metal. My plan is to make a few cosmetic updates to it for a more mid-century modern vibe. In order to do that, I will be staining the shelves in an acorn brown color to match the other furniture in the room. I am also planning on painting all of the hardware and the posts with gold spray paint.

You can see the entire process I went through to make this Ikea Svalnas hack on this blog post.

THE RESULTS

I couldn’t be happier with how this project turned out! I am slowly adding a few things to the shelves as I work on other projects in the room.

What do you think? Good little hack? The possibilities are endless with this shelving unit. It could easily be painted or stained a number of different ways. What would you do?

You can always check out my One Room Challenge progress on my Instagram feed and in stories as well. Be sure to check out the other ORC participants and their projects here. Everyone is working so hard!

  1. Do you know if these shelving units are still available from IKEA? When I click on link, they are no longer there.

    1. Unfortunately I don’t think Ikea carries this line anymore! Such a bummer because it was a really good solution for wall storage.
