Earthy Neutral Guest Bedroom – One Room Challenge – Week 6

It’s finally time for our guest bedroom reveal! I started the fall One Room Challenge thinking this room would just need some paint and a little bedding refresh. Somehow, like most projects around here, it turned into so much more than that.

In just 6 weeks time, this room has completely transformed from a blank space into a warm, cozy, and inviting guest bedroom. After weeks of planning, prepping, and DIYing, this room is finally ready for its big reveal. I’m excited to share it with you!

THE DIY CHANNEL TUFTED HEADBOARD AND BED FRAME

A channel-tufted headboard felt like the perfect addition to this room. It’s a clean, streamlined piece that can easily be used in a modern or traditional setting.

I went with a lush Astor Velvet fabric that I purchased from West Elm in the color Stone. Depending on where you’re standing and how the light hits it, the color of the fabric varies from light to dark.

There was a lot of planning that went into making this channel-tufted headboard. It seemed quite daunting at first, but once I got started, it was smooth sailing. Finish it all off with a matching upholstered bed frame and it’s complete!

THE FURNITURE

All of the furniture pieces were existing in the space. The dresser, nightstands, and desk are classic Mid-Century Modern pieces that I’ve had for years. I used a combination of these unlacquered brass knobs and pulls to change out the hardware. After several unsuccessful attempts to age the brass, I decided to leave them as-is and let them age naturally over time.

THE BEDDING

The bed is layered to the max and I love it!! Whether our guests sleep hot or cold, there’s a blanket, quilt, or comforter for everyone! Just about all the bedding came from the Casaluna line at Target.

It seemed like the perfect time to upgrade the mattress as well. I want our guests to have the best night’s sleep and that is why I chose a Lull mattress.

THE DIY SKINNY BENCH

Who was here for the skinny bench build? It’s hard to believe I started this project with just two pieces of inexpensive lumber. I pulled out every trick in the book to age the pieces of wood. After aging the wood, came the building. I learned all about mortise and tenon joints and made my best attempt with the tools I had on hand. The end result… a skinny bench for $12.22 versus $400… I’ll take it as a win!

Be sure to check out all of the other ORC participants’ final reveals here. It was such a great experience to participate in this challenge and connect with fellow DIYers and designers. I continue to be amazed by all the talent out there.

  1. This is so beautiful! I love it. I think I may just buy the headboard you linked bc I’m not in a place to DIY- but where did you get the matching frame?

    1. Aw thank you Holli! I actually made the upholstered bed frame as well. I think West Elm has some upholstered bed frame options.

    1. Thank you Toni! Unfortunately, they don’t make my favorite sheets anymore. These are from Bed Bath & Beyond, the Wamsutta Dream Zone sheet. I’m still trying to find a good replacement for them.
