Where do I even begin with this half-bath renovation? Here’s proof that sometimes the smallest rooms can take the longest! We DIY’ed every single inch of this space and I am so proud to share the reveal with you today.
Here is a little before and after shot of the space.
THE DIY VANITY
It all started with this DIY vanity and concrete countertop. Building the vanity was the first step towards updating our half bath. I’ve never built a vanity before, but of course that wasn’t going to stop me. It is much like a furniture build, except you need to take into consideration the plumbing and fixtures. The inspiration for my vanity was mostly from this Pottery Barn Abbott Single Sink Vanity. You can read all about the vanity build at this blog post.
THE CONCRETE COUNTERTOP
Let me tell you about concrete countertops. They may seem scary, but they are not! There’s definitely a hefty amount of prep work that goes into making them, but it’s pretty straightforward after that. Concrete countertops were always something I wanted to try out and this was the perfect opportunity to do so. I’ve got a full tutorial on the concrete countertops on this blog post.
THE WALL TREATMENTS
Now that the vanity was complete, it was time to start digging into the actual bathroom. My plan, for the longest time, was to do board & batten with grasscloth wallpaper on top and that is exactly what we did. We added a simple board & batten molding to the walls and painted it with Sherwin Williams Alabaster. The grasscloth wallpaper is from a Magnolia Home line called Crosshatch String Wallpaper.
THE FINISHING DETAILS
It’s all about the details, right? This pivoting mirror from Pottery Barn is a must-have with the board & batten wall treatment. It sits perfectly off the wall and does not interfere with the molding.
The antique soap dispenser is probably one of my favorite finds! It was not in the best shape when it arrived, but I was able to restore it to near-perfect condition. The gallery wall has some of my favorite prints from Vintage Supply. I love the muted colors and they coordinate so well with the tiny vintage rug I found.
It still amazes me the amount of work that went into this tiny half bath, but I couldn’t be more proud of how it turned out! I hope you walk away feeling inspired or maybe even ready to tackle a vanity or some concrete countertops.

This looks amazing, we have tiny powder room as well. Can I ask ceiling height?
Thank you Danielle! Absolutely, the ceiling height in here is 9ft.
This is so well done! May I ask where the brass soap dispenser is from? Just darling!
Thank you so much— The soap dispenser is my favorite part! It’s vintage, and I got it on ebay. Had clean it up a bit, but totally worth it.
Just found this via Pinterest, can you tell me the dimensions of your bathroom? It seems like the perfect size for a small guess bath.
I love your sink too, great job on that!
Thank you!!!
Thank you so much Lynda! The dimensions of the room are about 5.5 feet by 5.5 feet.
This is lovely! I also have 9 foot ceilings in our powder room and I’m having a terrible time deciding on proportions for our wainscoting. I like the height you did here. Can you please share the height of your paneling? Thanks!
Thank you Laura! The paneling is 5ft tall. Good luck with your project!
This is just the perfect vanity! I’m going to try my hand at making the same one in the coming weeks! Can I ask if you painted the plumbing below? Or did you use a black or dark P-trap?
That’s so great to hear Stacey— I hope you do make a vanity! I splurged and went for this drain assembly: https://rstyle.me/+9CxZDxTv_Vz7qaxCpU8e1A
But I have also painted p-traps black before and that works just fine too. Good luck with your project!
We just finished our replica using your guide and it turned out great! The link for the towel bar takes you to a huge bar. Can you share what you used that fits so nicely into the base frame?
Yay! That is awesome Stacey— I bet it looks amazing! I just double checked the link and that is exactly what I used, an appliance pull. It doesn’t look like they have the black version anymore and mine is a 16″ version. I tried regular pulls and none of them were deep enough to hang a towel from. I would look for a 16″ appliance pull.
Hi…where on earth did you find the soap dispenser??
I’m looking for something like it…I just can’t seem to find one…:-/
Thanks for any information….
It’s the best! I found it on ebay. Some can get pricey, but I’ve always had luck finding something reasonable.
Hello There ! Love your style, love what you’ve done here, where do I find the cute little vintage Soap Dispenser ?
Victoria Curtis
Thank you! It’s a vintage wall mounted soap dispenser that I found it on eBay. You can usually find them on eBay or facebook marketplace.
