We’re in the home stretch here at week 5 of the One Room Challenge. I cannot wait to see the other ORC participants’ final reveal over the next few weeks. There are a few projects I’ve been following closely and they’re going to be so GOOD.
This week I’ve been busy making a channel tufted headboard and bed frame and I am in shock with the results! It turned out better than I could have imagined.
THE BED FRAME
The bed frame is a simple build made out of 2×4 boards and some 1×3 wood slats. It’s almost like framing a wall if you’ve ever done that. I’ll be following up with a full tutorial on this at a later date.
The bed rails are constructed out of 2×10 boards wrapped in batting and fabric. We attached them from the inside of the bed frame. Once the side rails are secure you can add the slats, which will sit nicely inside the bed rails.
THE CHANNEL TUFTED HEADBOARD
I’ve upholstered a headboard before, but nothing quite like a channel-tufted headboard. It’s one of those projects that may seem overwhelming at first, but once you get started, it’s not so bad.
The most important part of the project is keeping the channels straight as you work. It’s really easy to do once you get in a rhythm with the project. Finishing the top of the headboard gets a little tricky, but with patience and a little trial and error, it can be done. The fabric I purchased is West Elm’s Astor Velvet in the color Stone and I used a total of 6 yards for the headboard and bed rails.
Just like the bed frame, I’ll be following up with a full tutorial on the headboard.
It’s crunch time! You can check on the other ORC participants here and see how close they are to finishing their rooms. I will share what I can on my Instagram feed and in stories this week, but I don’t want to give too much away. You’ll have to stay tuned for the final reveal next week!
