Modern Vintage Boys Bedroom – One Room Challenge – Week 8

What a journey this has been for my first One Room Challenge! In just 8 weeks time, this room has successfully gone from nursery to big-boy room. My son requested a dinosaur room and a dinosaur room is exactly what he got, except with a modern vintage vibe. After weeks of planning, prepping, and DIYing, this room is finally ready for its big reveal. I’m excited to share it with you!

THE JOURNEY

You can take a peek back to week 1 to see what we started with. It felt like a bit of a risk painting the entire room a darkish green color, but I think it paid off. You can read more about the custom paint color I used (along with a picture of the paint can lid formula) in week 3’s post. Knowing that the wall color would be dark, I made a point to keep all the other elements in the room very light.

Sorry, not sorry, but the antique brass bed has completely stolen the show here.

This shelving unit is an Ikea Hack project that I did during week 4 of the challenge. It gives the room some extra storage and a very functional little desk. The best part is the whole unit hangs on the wall, so it’s not taking up any floor space— a huge space saver.

Last but not least, I made all of the artwork in the room myself. I struggled to find the right artwork for the space. Most of the dinosaur art I found was cutesy and colorful and I was looking for subtle, rustic, neutral dinosaur art. You can see how I made the vintage dinosaur wall hanging here as well as the simple gallery wall prints in week 7.

CONCLUSION

I can’t help but feel a little sad that my first One Room Challenge is over. It was so helpful to have deadlines to meet, especially when it comes to projects in my own home. It definitely helped to keep me on track and held me accountable for completing tasks each week. I think this room has successfully gone from nursery to big-boy room.

Be sure to check out all of the other ORC participants’ final reveals here. It was such a great experience to participate in this challenge and connect with fellow DIYers and designers. I continue to be amazed by all the talent out there.

  1. What a classy room! I am in love with the green and all the dinosaur touches. And that BED!! I’ve been searching for a full sized vintage brass bed for months. I know I’ll find one eventually, but yours is exactly the style I’m looking for. Swooning!

        1. I’m sorry, I am not finding any info on the bed. It’s a vintage brass bed from FB Marketplace.

  2. Erin, what a cool boy’s room! I just pinned this for later because both of my kiddos’ rooms need some love. The bed definitely steals the show, but also love the shelving. Congrats on completing your first ORC! (It’s addictive!)

  3. I’m so in love with how this room turned out. It’s so sophisticated but also perfectly fit for a young man. The brass and green combination is gorgeous

  4. Love that wall color and the brass bed. Always love a good boys’ room. I’m sure he loves it!

  5. Love this!!! How did you clean the brass? I am stealing a brass bed from my parents that needs a good cleaning. Thanks!

    1. Thank you Marissa! This bed was in pretty bad shape, so I used Bar Keepers Friend and the scrubber side of a sponge. It might of left a few light scratches, but it was the only way since it was so tarnished. If your bed is not too bad, you could probably do Bar Keepers Friend with a microfiber cloth.

  6. Love this!!! How did you clean the brass? I am stealing a brass bed from my parents that needs a good cleaning. Thanks!

  7. Hello! I am truly obsessed with this wall color. What is it called?? I’m trying to match it but don’t think I’ve gotten it just right

  8. Gorgeous! Are you pleased with the shade of green still? Does it get too dark at night or pastel during the day? I’m considering painting my living dining combined room this color and wondered.

    1. I am very pleased with the color! It is a darker color, but I think it transitions well between day time and night time. Every space is different, so maybe just go for it and try it on one whole wall.
