I thought it was a good time to share our nursery since we are about to make some changes to it. We went with an adventure/woodland theme for our space. It was not my intention to make it a gender-neutral nursery, but I think the color scheme and theme would be fitting for a baby boy or a baby girl. Kids spaces are so much fun to design, especially nurseries!
THE CRIB AND BEDDING
We went with a modern convertible crib that has grown with our son. It has made it through two kids now and has held up well to bumps, kicks, scratches… you name it. I am fortunate enough to have a grandmother who is quite the seamstress and she actually made the crib bumper for me. We kept the bumper similar to the wall color so it would just blend. The gold Aztec diamond crib sheets were from Etsy and they add just the right pop of color and pattern to the room. The crib skirt is just a charcoal arrow print fabric that I found. After cutting the fabric down to size, I attached it, in sections, to the box spring frame of the crib with some Velcro strips.
THE ARTWORK
The large DIY sign above the crib was a simple project. I attached a few boards together, stained them, and topped it off with a coat of matte polyurethane. From there I created a graphic that I painted onto the sign with acrylic craft paint. The gallery wall above the changing table is filled with a random assortment of things. I filled the frames with different prints, fabric swatches, a feather, a bow tie, an illustration from an old book, and more. You can really get creative here and use various items from around your home. It’s always fun to find new uses for things you already have on hand.
THE TEEPEE
We kept our teepee really simple. I started with a few large branches from a friend and got to work. I stripped off most of the bark and then I applied a matte polyurethane to the branches to seal them. Using some rope, I tied the bundle of branches together at one end. Once the bundle is standing upright (with rope end at the top) you can spread out the branches to form a teepee shape. We just used a canvas drop cloth from Home Depot as the cover. The drop cloth just needed a few stitches at the top to hold it all together. Add a few accessories, some fluffy pillows, a furry rug, and you’re done!
This room has served us so well over time— I hope it offers some ideas and inspiration for those working on nurseries right now.
