Modern Vintage Boys Bedroom – One Room Challenge – Week 3

Here we are at week 3 of the One Room Challenge. This week is all about paint: paint samples, picking the paint color, and painting the room. Like I mentioned last week I’ve decided against just doing a feature wall, and I will be painting the entire room green. And after many, many paint samples I think we’ve finally found “the one.”

CHOOSING THE PAINT COLOR

Here are all of the paint samples we’ve been exploring. It started as just a few samples, and then a few more, and then a few more. It’s funny how these things can escalate so quickly, haha.

A couple of the colors we tried were: Behr Conifer Green, SW Woodland Lichen, SW Pristine Wilderness, SW Rosemary, SW Dried Thyme, Valspar Farm to Table, and Valspar Retreat.

It was very helpful to bring in the bedframe and see it with the paint samples on the wall. I also paired the paint samples with the bedding and some other décor to try a make a final decision.

THE WINNER

And the winner is…. NONE OF THEM! We ended up marrying two colors together for the perfect custom color!

Let me introduce you to Mrs. Rosemary and Mr. Dried Thyme, who got together and had a baby named Chase’s Dried Thyme (sorry, nothing real original going on with that name).

It was pretty simple to do; in fact, I didn’t really have to do anything at all. The wonderful people at Sherwin Williams did all the work for me. I just explained to them that I love both of these colors, but Rosemary was a little too dark, and Dried Thyme was a little too light. And voila, they created the perfect color for me.

I quickly got to work painting the entire bedroom, and now I’m ready to take on some more projects. A big one to tackle this week will be an Ikea wall-mounted shelving unit. Stay tuned for the full details on this Ikea hack in week 4.

You can always check out my progress on my Instagram feed and in stories as well. And don’t forget to check out the other ORC participants and their projects here. There are so many great projects this year!

    1. Thank you Asia! The bed you are making is going to be incredible! Can’t wait to see it finished

      1. Hi! I took your combo to SW and they did a sample for me and it didn’t turn out to be this beautiful green. ?

        Any advice?

        1. Oh no, I’m so sorry to hear that Haley! The color is right in between SW Rosemary and SW Dried Thyme. So maybe you could either try having them lighten the SW Rosemary or darken the SW Dried Thyme? All paint colors look different depending on the room/lighting. I hope you can figure something out.

  1. Love the color — although I had to recreate it at Kelly Moore since that’s where we’re buying the rest of our paint from. Bought a sample from Sherwin Williams based on your label above, took that sample to Kelly Moore, and they color matched it.

In case you were interested, here’s the color mix they came up with:

    B – 0 Y 40.0000
    C – 0 Y 44.0000
    DU – 0 Y 8.7500
    KX – 0 Y 14.0000

    1. Oh you are the best— Thanks so much for sharing this info! I know it will be helpful to someone. Thanks again for sharing!

    1. I used Barkeepers Friend and it seemed to do the trick. I had to use a scrubbing pad on ours because it was pretty bad. If you can use something softer like a microfiber cloth that would be better to avoid scratching.

  2. Hi! I love your color. Is there any way you could label all the greens on the wall when you were comparing them to one another? I’m interested to see which one is which…

    1. Hi Marie! I am so sorry, I wish I had labeled all the sample colors on the wall. Unfortunately I did not and it’s been a little too long since I completed this project to remember what all the samples were. I am so sorry, but I’ll definitely keep this in mind to do in the future.

  3. I have avocado tile in my bathroom, shoulder high. I am looking for a dark green paint for the walls and ceiling. Every dark paint I try goes immediately brown when I put it on the walls. I can’t figure it out. Do I need to add more yellow to the paint? Any blue undertone is immediately wrong.
Any help or advice is appreciated!

    1. Hmm, maybe have the tile color matched and have them darken it at the paint store? Or color match it and then find a color that would be a few shades darker?
