Shiplap Fireplace

Looking for a project you can bust out in a weekend? Try tackling this quick and easy fireplace update! It’s a simple project that can make a big impact.

Here is a before picture of what we were working with.

We started by removing the mantel and the crown molding under the mantel.

I wanted a real simple, rustic piece of wood to use as the new mantel. We went with a 2” antique oak joist board. I did a light sanding on it and then went over it with a wire brush to clean it up. We got it mounted and then we were ready to start adding the shiplap.

We used 1×8 nickel gap shiplap that was pre-primed. It’s a tongue and groove style board, so once you get the first board up, it’s easy to keep stacking the rest of the boards up the wall. We ended up stacking 6 boards in total. We used construction adhesive and a nail gun to attach all the shiplap/trim pieces.

Once the shiplap was up, we trimmed it out with 1×2 pine boards. Lastly, it was time to add the crown molding.

After looking at a few crown molding options, I decided to go with a simple craftsman style crown. There was a large and a small version, and I opted for the larger one.

Here is a breakdown of the trim pieces we used.

Once all the trim work was done, it was time to fill, caulk, sand, and paint.

And here is another look at that before—and now the after!

This little update makes the fireplace more of a focal point in the room. Also, using a wood mantel helps to break up all of the white trim. Ready to take on this weekend project?

    1. We actually stacked two 1x2s on top of each other. Sorry if that wasn’t clear. It gave the right and left side a clean edge, so you don’t see the sides of the shiplap boards.

    1. It was installed by our builder when we built our home. The only info I found is that it’s call “Majestic DVB4000 36” direct vent propane fireplace.” Hope that helps!

  1. Love the look of this! How wide is your television? I’d love to do something like this but am wondering if our 65” tv would cover most of the shiplap action. How long are the shiplap boards? Thanks!
